What to know before you start
These numbers are public, meaning many people use them at once and any visitor is able to open the inbox and read what arrives there. Two practical consequences follow from that, and most competing pages mention neither:
- The line may already carry an WhatsApp account. Ask for a code and you can land in somebody else's session, or be asked for a password you never set. When that happens, move to a different number.

A UK mobile starts with 07 domestically; internationally you drop that zero and put +44 in front: 07911 123456 becomes +44 7911 123456. Every British mobile begins with 7 after the dial code. The classic mistake is writing +44 07911 with the zero still there — those messages never arrive.

How WhatsApp verification actually works
Odds on a public number: poor. Free public numbers usually fail on this app, and we would rather say so than promise otherwise. The reason is below; the fix is a private number that has not been used before.
WhatsApp sends a 6-digit code by SMS. After a short countdown it offers to “call me” and read the code aloud — that option is useless here, because these numbers receive SMS only and take no voice calls. Always stay on the SMS option.
When you enter the number, drop the leading zero after the dial code: +20 10…, never +20 010….
What usually stops you
- The previous holder’s two-step PIN. WhatsApp lets an account holder set a six-digit PIN on the number. If whoever used this line before you enabled it, WhatsApp asks for that PIN immediately after the code arrives and you cannot continue — and the reset takes days. On public numbers this is the single most common failure.
- Virtual-range blocking. WhatsApp is among the most aggressive platforms at detecting and rejecting virtual and shared numbers. It is, without question, the hardest app on this site.
- “Too many attempts, try again later.” Repeatedly requesting a code on the same line triggers a cool-down. Switch numbers instead of retrying.
Be aware too that registering the number on your device moves the account to you and logs the previous holder out — which also means the next person to register that line logs you out. An account on a public number is not an account you keep.
Once you are inside the account
If registration does go through, do two things immediately: enable two-step verification with a PIN you keep, and add a recovery email. Note that linked devices (WhatsApp Web and Desktop) do not need the number again once they are paired.
WhatsApp code not arriving?
- Wait one to three minutes. An SMS usually crosses several networks before it lands.
- Re-check the format. Make sure +44 appears exactly once, that the leading zero is gone, and that WhatsApp's country selector is set to United Kingdom.
- Request the code again from inside WhatsApp — the new one arrives in the same inbox here. Do not fire off more than two or three requests a minute; apps throttle a line that is hammered.
- Try a different number. Public lines get burned over time. If a number receives everything except WhatsApp, it is WhatsApp that has blocked it.

One distinction matters enormously, though: creating a new account on a temporary number is not the same as moving an existing one onto it. Some guides suggest swapping your real account over to a virtual line. With a public number that is dangerous advice — the line can be retired or reissued, and your route back into the account goes with it. Never move an account you own onto a number you do not.
Before you use the number
- Never receive bank codes or wallet confirmations on it.
- Do not make it your recovery method, because a temporary line can disappear tomorrow and take your only route back into the account with it.
- Turn on app-based 2FA the moment you are inside, and add an email address you control.
- And remember the inbox is public — never use it for anything you would not post publicly.
