The rule of thumb that comes out of all this: if losing the WhatsApp account would upset you, use a private number. If you just need a single code, the free numbers above are all you need.
How WhatsApp verification actually works
Odds on a public number: poor. Free public numbers usually fail on this app, and we would rather say so than promise otherwise. The reason is below; the fix is a private number that has not been used before.
WhatsApp sends a 6-digit code by SMS. After a short countdown it offers to “call me” and read the code aloud — that option is useless here, because these numbers receive SMS only and take no voice calls. Always stay on the SMS option.
When you enter the number, drop the leading zero after the dial code: +20 10…, never +20 010….
What usually stops you
- The previous holder’s two-step PIN. WhatsApp lets an account holder set a six-digit PIN on the number. If whoever used this line before you enabled it, WhatsApp asks for that PIN immediately after the code arrives and you cannot continue — and the reset takes days. On public numbers this is the single most common failure.
- Virtual-range blocking. WhatsApp is among the most aggressive platforms at detecting and rejecting virtual and shared numbers. It is, without question, the hardest app on this site.
- “Too many attempts, try again later.” Repeatedly requesting a code on the same line triggers a cool-down. Switch numbers instead of retrying.
Be aware too that registering the number on your device moves the account to you and logs the previous holder out — which also means the next person to register that line logs you out. An account on a public number is not an account you keep.

- Wait one to three minutes. An SMS often crosses several networks before it lands; a short delay is normal, not a failure.
- Re-check the format. Make sure the dial code appears exactly once and that WhatsApp’s country selector matches the number’s country.
- Request the code again. Tap “resend” inside WhatsApp — the new code arrives in the same inbox here.
- Try another number, ideally from a different country. Public numbers get burned over time. If a line receives everything except WhatsApp, it is WhatsApp specifically that has blocked it.
- Open the number’s inbox before you request the code. Messages appear the instant they land, and if you are on another page it is easy to miss one going past.
Safety rules before you use a public number
- Never receive anything sensitive on it. No bank codes, no wallet confirmations, no account-recovery links that matter.
- Do not make it your recovery method. A temporary number can disappear tomorrow; if it is your only way back in, the account is already at risk.
- Turn on app-based 2FA the moment you are in. An authenticator app is stronger than SMS and does not depend on a line you do not own.
- Do not attach your main email. A throwaway account opened on a throwaway number is best kept separate from your real identity.

Is using a temporary number with WhatsApp legal?
Receiving SMS on a virtual number is legal in most jurisdictions and is used every day by real companies for product testing and privacy protection. What can be unlawful is the use, not the number: fraud, impersonation, evading a ban you were given, or mass-registering accounts for resale.
Separately from the law, there is something you should know: many apps — WhatsApp among them — have terms that restrict registering with a number you do not control, and an account opened that way can be limited or closed. The choice is yours, but we are not going to hide the point.
