If your goal is to avoid sharing your personal number with other Telegram users, start with Telegram’s privacy controls. That is a different problem from removing the number from registration or handing control of it to a shared public inbox.
Number privacy and number ownership are different
Telegram’s phone-number privacy guidance explains how visibility works and how to adjust it. Those controls affect what people see inside Telegram. They do not change who owns a phone number or who can read an external public SMS inbox.
For an account you intend to keep, use a number you control. If you choose a separate line, check its eligibility, renewal conditions and how you will retain access. A second number does not have to be public, and a public number does not make an account anonymous.
Why a Telegram code may not appear as SMS
Telegram’s login and SMS guidance explains that a login code may be sent inside an existing Telegram session rather than by SMS. Read the destination shown in the login screen. An in-app message will not appear in a browser-based SMS inbox.
This website can only display SMS delivered to a listed number. It cannot retrieve a code from an existing Telegram session, answer a voice call, or complete additional account checks. Do not keep refreshing an SMS page when the app says the code was sent by another method.
What a temporary Telegram number listing tells you
The Telegram number listing is a directory filter. You can choose a country and open a public inbox to inspect its activity. A listing or earlier Telegram message is not proof of present acceptance, account ownership or future delivery.
Anyone visiting a public inbox can read its displayed messages. Other visitors may use the same number, and the number may be retired. This makes a shared line unsuitable as the long-term access or recovery method for a personal account.
What to check when you cannot sign in
- Confirm that you are signing in to your own account with a number you control.
- Check the number and country selection shown in Telegram.
- Read where Telegram says it sent the code and use only a delivery method it offers.

If the flow points to a previous user’s account or asks for a password you never set, do not try to access that account. Possession of a code in a public inbox does not establish that the account belongs to you.

Can I guarantee anonymity with a temporary number?
No. Changing the number does not remove device, network or account information that a service may process, and a public SMS inbox exposes its messages.
Does two-step verification make the public inbox private?
No. Additional account protection does not change access to the number’s inbox or guarantee that you can keep the number.
